What Health Areas Do You Worry About Most With Your Dogs or Cats?

by Deserving Pets on September 30, 2010

Survey Says:

Survey Question:  #1  “What ‘health areas’ do you worry about most with your dogs or cats?”

Most answered….”Make sure they are getting good nutrition.”

Second runner up…’Avoid toxins, chemicals and carcinogens.’

Thank you all for your many survey responses! The amazing thing is that my 30 years of experience had me recognizing these two basic problems long ago.   You’ve hit the bullseye and it just goes to show how much you really know.  I was impressed.  And just like you, I’m concerned and worried about these very same things.

I’m working to create a format where we can all interact to answer your questions and get you the information you need. I’m excited about this but it will take a bit of time. I have a new site (it’s not working yet so hold off visiting)  www.holisticvettalk.com

#2 Answer: Worried about toxins… is there a solution?

Two of my last newsletters discussed the toxic effect of common Top Spot products. After years of use, Frontline is now becoming less effective. This is typical of any widely used drug for it’s ‘victims’ develop resistance over time.   A new product, Vectra 3D is now available- which is more effective- but… it contains Permethrin at 36.08%.

Allow me to quote Wickopedia, ‘Permethrin is a common synthetic chemical, widely used as an insecticideacaricide, and insect repellent. It belongs to the family of synthetic chemicals called pyrethroids and functions as a neurotoxin, affecting neuron membranes by prolonging sodium channel activation. It is not known to rapidly harm most mammals or birds, but is highly toxic to cats and fish.[1][2] It generally has a low mammalian toxicity and is poorly absorbed by skin.’

Wickopedia isn’t totally correct as the Washington-based Center for Public Integrity and the National Resources Defense Council have published reports which included data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.  According to CPI, from 2002 through 2007, 1,600 pet deaths related to spot-on treatments were reported to the EPA; more than double the fatalities linked to flea treatments without pyrethroids or pyrethrin derivatives.  The pyrethroid spot-ons also accounted for more than half of the ‘major’ pesticide pet reactions, including brain damage, heart attacks and seizures.

It’s a double edged sword, we need to protect our pets from ticks and fleas and heartworm but how can we do it safely?

Ticked Off!

I understood the need for a safe way to prevent against fleas and ticks 20 years ago and tried many products that are out there on the market.  That’s why I made Ticked Off available to you from www.deservingpets.com. It really works but it’s not good for every situation.  If your house and numerous pets are infected, you may have to use one dose of a top-spot product and work on the environment.  A flea lays 600-800 eggs at one time. Fleas can become a nightmare.   At times, there’s no good alternative but to use chemicals.  But… at least we can work together to minimize the chemical usage.

For example, if you administer heartworm preventive, you may want to consider not giving it during the winter months when there are no mosquitoes.  In fact, many of the once a month brands can be extended to be given every 6 weeks.  Remember that typical heartworm preventives work backwards:  i.e., a dose on May 1st covers all of April, (the preceding month) and two weeks in March.

Let’s face it, in today’s world there’s no way to avoid all chemicals, toxins and carcinogens.

Air, Water and Earth ( Think Chinese Elements)  have all become laden, dripping with toxins.   It just gets worse, decade by decade.  The best and honestly the only solution I could come up with for dealing with toxins is excellent nutrition that also helps detoxify and clean cells, keeping them healthy and disease free.  Disease free cells = Disease resistant body.  That’s why I created Deserving Pets Vital Vities with Milk thistle to clean the liver, Grape Seed Extract, Vitamin C and Vitamin E as antioxidants and Super foods with specific Phytochemicals for cancer and disease prevention. (Dogs fed Kale dumped toxins and carcinogens over 6 times faster from cells.)

I was just so tired of seeing so many patients with avoidable diseases.  And cats and dogs are totally ripped off in the field of nutrition.  Somehow, we’re expecting them to stay healthy on compressed, heated and processed pet food devoid of the tools they need to stay healthy.   It’s just not fair !  I fell in love with my patients and had to find an answer.    And I found an answer that’s working even better than I expected !

More Sources of Information

I won’t be around forever, sadly none of us will… but I want to be healthy and vital for as long as I can and want the same thing for your pets…those special ‘folks’ I’ve dedicated my life to.   I’ve written Dr. Khalsa’s Natural Dog and am moving towards my next book…. temporary title… Fixing Fido Holistically.. where I tell you how to treat and fix just about every canine problem.   And it’s why I’m writing for Feline Wellness Magazine (Banishing Bladder Problems) and Animal Wellness Magazine (10 tips for a Long Life: Green Gifts for the Holidays: NAET for Allergies) and Dog Fancy (Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers, Lasers).   I’m  going to be a regular columnist in Dog World Magazine where I will write about a problem and take questions (Growing a Glorious Coat: Chronic Ear Problems).  Many of these articles are slated to be published in the near future.

Deadly Feline Diseases

Once I’m done with the new dog book, I move onto the cat book which will be very comprehensive.  My mission statement for the cat book is to thoroughly research FIV, FeLV and FIP and work toward decreasing the number of cats that get this disease.  I’m looking for shelters and care centers to give donations of Deserving Pets Vital Vities for Cats. I firmly believe that if kittens in shelters get complete and balanced nutritional support, many more will be able to fight off and completely recover from these often-times fatal diseases.   I designed Deserving Pets Vital Vities with this in mind for both dogs and cats.

Stay Tuned! I’m going to be calling for suggestions for cat shelters and asking you to tell me why they should be considered for a donation of Deserving Pets Vital Vities for Cats.  I’ll ask for suggestions along with reasons why you think it would be an appropriate place to use Vital Vities and discover the real difference it makes.

I haven’t forgotten the dog shelters, and once I decide on a half a dozen or more cat shelters, we move on to our canine friends who need new homes…. along with complete nutrition to avoid disease and become shining, vibrant dogs for their new, loving peoples!

I’m also going to tell you some super nutritional tips and give you sound advice on the right nutrition for your dogs and cats.

There’s so much to tell and so much to talk about… so it’s our job to figure out how we can do this and keep our pets as healthy as possible.
